Renewable Energy Vs Climate Change
The guest speakers at a recent club meeting were Jenny Currell and PP Pat Crichton who spoke about the various forms of renewable energy and the partnership between ‘Rise© Community Support Network’ and ‘Mundaring in Transition’ (MiT) to raise community awareness of the new and ever improving renewable energy products on the market, now appearing on the market and under development throughout the world.
The Rise/MiT project will not only talk about the benefits of renewable energy but will demonstrate the benefits by installing a 6.5 Kw solar photo voltaic system on a Rise owned facility ‘Andrews Place’ in Parkerville that houses 12 people with disabilities. This will deliver significant savings on energy use to its residents.
MiT aims to raise $9000 from the local community to fund the installation on the understanding that that the saving in electricity cost is used at Andrew’s Place for the benefit of the residents. Rise will install a similar system, of equal or larger capacity, on their Middle Swan office building within 15 months of the completion of the Andrew’s Place installation.
It is expected that the two systems will generate savings in energy cots in excess of $5000 p.a. and will save more than 15 tonnes of carbon emissions being released into the atmosphere each year. MiT and Rise believe this innovative project, the first of its kind in WA, will provide a 'proof of concept' model for future development for other similar service organisations. The project ticks many boxes for both organisations- It benefits Rise clients directly; is environmentally sound; involves Rise and MiT working with the local community and provides both organisations with valuable social capital.
The talk was very well received by the club members and resulted in a large number of questions and comments, which continued after the close of the meeting. Always a reliable indicator of an interesting and well presented topic!
